Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial

Dedicated in 1998, the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial is located on the state capitol grounds in Madison. Etched into the granite memorial are the names of officers from over 100 law enforcement agencies, including two federal agencies, who were killed in the line of duty. The memorial is made of bethel white granite from the same Vermont quarry used to build the Wisconsin State Capitol building in 1917. In addition to the stone, the memorial shares some architectural features with the Capitol so that it blends into the grounds and complements the building. The monument is comprised of five sections, arranged in a circle with seasonal flowers planted in the center, containing rows of officer’s names in random order. Four low granite blocks, each containing a single word—Valor, Honor, Duty, Service—and the state seal etched into the face, separate the five sections. The front of the memorial consists of a larger block with a bronze plaque of the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial logo and a dedication. The theme and purpose of the memorial, “In Honor of Those Who Have Died; Dedicated to Those Who Live and Serve,” is engraved around the top.

The FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin seeks submissions from agencies that wish to have their memorials featured in the magazine’s Bulletin Honors department. Needed materials include a short description, a photograph, and an endorsement from the agency’s ranking officer. Submissions can be e-mailed to leb@ic.fbi.gov or mailed to Editor, FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin, FBI Academy, Quantico, VA 22135.
