North Carolina State Highway Patrol Memorial
The North Carolina Highway Patrol State Auxiliary (incorporated April 26, 1976) received approval in July 1984 to erect a memorial on the grounds of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) Training Academy in Raleigh.
A groundbreaking ceremony took place in December 1985. On May 18, 1986, the granite memorial was unveiled and dedicated to patrol officers who have been killed in the line of duty. The monument bears the following inscription and is surrounded by the names of the 70 NCSHP members who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the citizens of the great state of North Carolina.
Through the Years
In memory to those who lost
Their lives in the line of duty.
We hope you see their faces
And hearts in this stone of beauty.
In dedication and honor to
Those who died through the years,
We stand before this memorial
And hold back the tears.
Over the years we lost brave troopers
Who were our comrades and friends.
We dedicated this monument in their
Honor knowing that when one dies, life begins.
An annual wreath-laying ceremony takes place on Memorial Day weekend, where the names of all 70 honored troopers are read out loud to commemorate their sacrifice.
