Bulletin Notes

Law enforcement officers are challenged daily in the performance of their duties; they face each encounter freely and unselfishly while answering the call to duty. In certain instances, their actions warrant special attention from their respective departments. The Bulletin also wants to recognize those situations that transcend the normal rigors of the law enforcement profession.

One evening, Officers Anthony Evans and Michael Burnett of the Birmingham, Alabama, Police Department were on patrol during a deadly flash flood warning. They were dispatched to a location where a motorist was trapped inside her vehicle, which was stuck in rising flood water. Upon the officers’ arrival, the car was almost fully submerged. Officers Evans and Burnett quickly waded into the water and retrieved the unconscious woman.

The victim had no pulse and was not breathing. Members of the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Department performed CPR on her until she regained consciousness and transported her to a local hospital for further treatment.

Officers Evans and Burnett went above and beyond their public service duties and saved the victim’s life without regard for their own safety.
