Bulletin Notes
Law enforcement officers are challenged daily in the performance of their duties; they face each encounter freely and unselfishly while answering the call to duty. In certain instances, their actions warrant special attention from their respective departments. The Bulletin also wants to recognize those situations that transcend the normal rigors of the law enforcement profession.
Late one afternoon, Deputy Alfredo Flores of the Tulare County, California, Sheriff's Office answered a dispatch call to a house fire. Upon his arrival at the scene, he was informed that there was a nonverbal boy trapped inside the home.
Without hesitation, Deputy Flores ran inside to search for the 12-year-old, but after a few moments, he was overcome by heat and heavy smoke and had to run outside for air. It took three further attempts before Deputy Flores was finally able to locate the juvenile, who had taken refuge from the flames in a bathroom. Deputy Flores picked up the child and carried him out of the house to safety. The boy was treated for smoke inhalation at a local hospital.
Deputy Flores’ swift action and fearlessness saved the life of a vulnerable member of his community.
