Bulletin Notes

Law enforcement officers are challenged daily in the performance of their duties; they face each encounter freely and unselfishly while answering the call to duty. In certain instances, their actions warrant special attention from their respective departments. The Bulletin also wants to recognize those situations that transcend the normal rigors of the law enforcement profession.

While on patrol around midnight, Officer Clay Musselman of the Cobb County, Georgia, Police Department observed a speeding vehicle. Despite the officer activating his emergency lights and sirens, the driver continued at high speeds. Shortly after, Officer Musselman came upon debris and downed trees in the roadway, then found the same vehicle on fire. He blocked the scene with his patrol car and approached the burning vehicle on foot, hearing a faint cry for help from the lone female driver inside. Officer Musselman broke the driver’s window with his baton and, despite the flames and smoke, pulled the injured woman to safety. She had a fractured pelvis, broken arm, and other injuries, making it impossible for her to escape without his help.
