Bulletin Notes
Law enforcement officers are challenged daily in the performance of their duties; they face each encounter freely and unselfishly while answering the call to duty. In certain instances, their actions warrant special attention from their respective departments. The Bulletin also wants to recognize those situations that transcend the normal rigors of the law enforcement profession.
One afternoon, the Evesham Township, New Jersey, Police Department (ETPD), along with local fire personnel, responded to a residential fire. The structure was 1 of 16 units located in a single building within an apartment complex.
Officer Kevin Long, first to arrive on scene, quickly assessed the situation. He discovered that a disabled man was trapped inside the burning home, a first-floor apartment. The officer did not hesitate and entered the residence under extreme conditions, all while moving in near-zero visibility to conduct a rescue of the trapped victim.
First, Officer Long removed the resident’s wheelchair and then, upon locating the man, helped him from the residence to safety. Subsequently, Officer Long, as well as the victim and his wife, were treated at a local hospital for smoke inhalation.
