The Fairfax County, Virginia, Police Department patch features a black background bordered in silver and with silver lettering. Originally designed in 1963, it was updated in 2012. Centered on the patch is the county seal, the heraldic crest of Thomas Fairfax, the sixth Lord Fairfax, whose family once owned much of the land in this part of northern Virginia. This crest features lions and a horse, symbolizing nobility and strength. The county was established in 1742 and was home to such notables as George Washington and George Mason.
