Bulletin Notes

Law enforcement officers are challenged daily in the performance of their duties; they face each encounter freely and unselfishly while answering the call to duty. In certain instances, their actions warrant special attention from their respective departments. The Bulletin also wants to recognize those situations that transcend the normal rigors of the law enforcement profession.

One evening while on patrol, Officer Dylan Coffman of the Flagler Beach, Florida, Police Department received a call for service in reference to two swimmers in distress. Already nearby, Officer Coffman, a strong swimmer and lifelong surfer, immediately exited his patrol vehicle and secured his police equipment inside before removing his rescue can. He then scaled the boardwalk fence; headed directly into the Atlantic Ocean; and brought the two citizens, who were caught in a dangerous rip current, to shore safely and without injury. This was not the first time Officer Coffman conducted a water rescue. As a result of his bravery, he was awarded the Flagler Beach Police Department’s Medal of Merit.
