The tree and vine represent William Penn’s treaty with the Lenni Lenape and reflect the original symbol of Bucks County. John Fitch’s steamboat also is depicted. A model of the boat was tested successfully on a creek in Southampton. Finally, the shield displays the coat of arms of William Penn, and the year 1685 marks the first mention of Southampton Township in provincial records.
