The Alfred, New York, Police Department patch is shaped like a knight’s shield to symbolize a protector or defender. In the background are blue, purple, and gold, the school colors of the two colleges in town — Alfred University and the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Technology.

Within the quarters of the patch are four symbols: King Alfred; his three bells, located throughout the town and its college campuses; a fire in a kiln to denote his fame as a ceramic center; and an architectural feature of King Alfred’s familiar Greek Revival style.
