Bulletin Notes

Law enforcement officers are challenged daily in the performance of their duties; they face each encounter freely and unselfishly while answering the call to duty. In certain instances, their actions warrant special attention from their respective departments. The Bulletin also wants to recognize those situations that transcend the normal rigors of the law enforcement profession.

One morning, Officer Dow Turrentine of the Rome, Georgia, Police Department was assisting another officer, who had conducted a traffic stop nearby, when he heard an accident involving three vehicles. The officer raced down the hill and roadway to see that an SUV was starting to smoke.

As he watched the fire quickly gain momentum, Officer Turrentine and two Good Samaritans worked to rescue a woman and her son, who were trapped. Once freed from the burning vehicle, the injured driver was moved to a patrol car while awaiting EMS to arrive as Officer Evan Roden consoled the crying child.

Moments after the driver and passenger were removed from the vehicle, it became fully engulfed in flames. Personnel from the Rome-Floyd County Fire Department arrived on site to extinguish the fire. The woman required treatment at a local hospital, and the son was cleared by emergency room physicians.
